The Region 1 tracking system is designed to measure the location of scattered electrons less than 1 meter away from the target and in opposite octants. The tracking system uses an ionization chamber equiped with Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) preamplifiers in order to handle the high radiation environements as well as enable a measurement of an ionization events location within the chamber with a resolution of 100[math] \mu m[/math]. The system contains two ionization chambered located 180 degrees apart on a rotateable mounting system which allows two opposing octants to be measured simultaneously. The rotateable mounting system can move the chambers through a 180 degree angle such that measurements may be made in all octants. The current status of the Region 1 tracking system is given in the paragraphs below.

The ionization chamber for Region 1 has achieved final design and is currently being constructed.

The readout electronics for Region 1 use a readout board, know as the VFAT board from CERN, to digitize the analog signals on the readout board and send them to a VME crate to be recorded.

The infrastucture to mount and rotate the chambers into position is 90% complete. The system
