Electron Probe Microanalyzer: Measured the X-rays backscattered from a sample as a function of the incident electron's location on the sample. The X-rays are analyzed using a crystal to disperse them forming an interference patter (Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy).
The device can handle materials with Activities up to 3 Ci ( Cobalt)
The device has a spacial resolution of 1$\mu$m^3
The detection limit is 100s of PPM
One example scanned a sample having a length of 6 mm
One sample show that the diffusion distance was between 5 and 20 $\mu$m depending on the Isotope
